About

Daily views of the Sun and updates on solar activity. ☀️

(Featuring Sunny, our lighthearted solar mascot.)

Daily Sunwatch is an automated solar and space-weather project focused on activity across the Sun and near-Earth environment. It uses scientific data and imagery from public sources to provide regular space-weather updates that are fun and easy to follow.

Times and updates are shown in Eastern Time (EST/EDT).

What We Watch

From solar activity to conditions near Earth.

Daily Sunwatch follows several parts of the Sun–Earth system and turns public space-weather data into clear, regularly updated observations.

☀ Solar Activity & Flares

Solar X-ray activity, flare events, and active regions across the Sun.

◉ Coronal Mass Ejections

Coronal activity and CME events reported through public space-weather sources.

↝ Solar Wind & Geomagnetic Activity

Solar-wind speed, IMF Bz, Kp, and other conditions in the near-Earth environment.

⌁ Aurora Conditions

Geomagnetic conditions and ingredients that can support auroral activity.

Daily Sunwatch also includes occasional nighttime and terrestrial-weather content, while keeping its primary focus on the Sun and space weather.

Sunny's Schedule

When does Sunny post?

Sunny currently “runs” every three hours—eight times a day—on the following schedule:

12 AM 🌙 Midnight
3 AM 🌕 Nighttime
6 AM 🌅 Early Morning
9 AM ☀️ Morning
12 PM 🌤️ Midday
3 PM ☀️ Afternoon
6 PM 🌇 Evening
9 PM 🌕 Nighttime

Sunny’s regular Sunwatch posts are the foundation of Daily Sunwatch’s automated posting system and serve as its primary solar updates.

Features such as Coronagraph Watch and Moony Moonwatch run alongside the main Daily Sunwatch system and are considered bonus posts. When conditions call for them, Sunny may make more than eight posts in a single day.

3 AM is the only special rule here. At 3 AM, Sunny wakes up and checks solar conditions. If conditions are elevated, Sunny makes a post. If conditions are low, Sunny goes back to sleep. 😴

Posts are made in Eastern Time (EST/EDT).

Characters

The faces of Daily Sunwatch.

Sunny serves as the primary character and visual identity of Daily Sunwatch. He represents the project across its solar observations, updates, and original content.

“Daily Sunwatch” and “Sunny” both refer to the same program. Sunny is a characterization of the Daily Sunwatch program.

Moony accompanies Daily Sunwatch’s nighttime and lunar content, providing a counterpart to Sunny for Moon-related observations.

Both characters are featured throughout the project and serve as the basis for many of the original designs and items available through the Daily Sunwatch Store.

Is Sunny AI?

Sunny runs on code.

Sunny himself is not AI. He is code that contains various message libraries and conditional logic that helps him decide when and how to react to changing space weather and varying conditions across the Sun.
